Two men stabbed at Birmingham dance music event as police probe Digbeth incident
Two men were stabbed at Birmingham’s Cru2 event in Digbeth as police investigate the incident and appeal for witnesses.
Two men were stabbed at a dance music event in Birmingham on Saturday evening, prompting West Midlands Police to launch a major investigation in Digbeth.
Officers were called to Lower Trinity Street shortly before 7pm on May 9 after reports that two people had suffered stabbing injuries at the ‘Cru2: The Birmingham Shutdown’ event. Both men were taken to hospital and police have said their injuries are not life-threatening. As of yet, no arrests have been confirmed, and detectives remained at the scene while inquiries continued.
The outdoor event, held at Luna Springs, had been due to run from 2pm to 11pm and brought together a lineup spanning bassline, drum ‘n’ bass and UK garage. Among the acts on the bill were Mozey, Mist, Basslayerz, DJ Q and Jamie Duggan. The venue itself regularly hosts club nights, football fan zones and festivals, making it a familiar spot for large crowds.
Local reports said the music was stopped suddenly after the incident. Screens inside the venue reportedly showed the message, “There has been an incident. Can everyone please bare [sic] with us”, before that was replaced with, “There has been an incident. Can everyone please leave the venue via the nearest exit.” Those in attendance were then evacuated.
Police have not said where inside the venue the stabbings happened, or what may have triggered the violence. Investigators are understood to be going through CCTV footage and speaking with staff and witnesses as part of the inquiry.
West Midlands Police have urged anyone with information to come forward, asking people to call 101 or use the Live Chat option on their website here, quoting incident number 4320. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
A police spokesperson said: “We know that they know there were lots of people inside the venue during the time of the incident. So would ask anyone who has any mobile phone footage, or information to come forward and make a report or speak to officers at the scene.”
