Britney Spears has avoided jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in a reduced DUI case. The plea deal includes informal probation, DUI classes, and continued mental health treatment.

Britney Spears has avoided jail time in her DUI case after pleading guilty to a lesser misdemeanour charge of reckless driving.
The singer was arrested on March 4 in Ventura County, California, after police pulled her over on suspicion of driving under the influence following reports of erratic, high-speed driving. She was later charged with a misdemeanour count of DUI.
At a hearing on Monday (May 4), the case was resolved through a plea agreement. Through her attorney, Spears pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanour charge of reckless driving, known in California as a “wet reckless” — a charge used in alcohol- or drug-related driving cases that is less serious than DUI. Prosecutors dismissed the original DUI count as part of the deal.
Under the agreement, Spears was sentenced to 12 months of informal probation. She must also comply with court-ordered conditions, including vehicle searches if requested by law enforcement, attendance at DUI education classes, and ongoing mental health treatment.
Her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, said: “She’s doing well. It was reduced. The DUI was dismissed. She entered a plea to reckless driving.”
He added:
“I don’t think anybody is happy about pleading guilty. We appreciate the district attorney recognising the positive steps Britney has taken to help herself, and we expect that she’ll continue to do so.”
Last month, Spears voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation facility. She also addressed the incident publicly, posting a video of herself dancing with her 19-year-old son, Jayden Federline, and thanking fans for their support.
This is not the first legal issue she has faced behind the wheel. In 2007, Spears was charged in a hit-and-run case, but those charges were later dropped, and a jury acquitted her of driving without a valid California license.
In recent years, Spears has remained in headlines beyond music, including the release of her memoir The Woman In Me, which drew wide attention for its candid account of her career, relationships, 13-year conservatorship, and personal life.
After the memoir’s release, ex-husband Kevin Federline accused her of cocaine use during the period she was breastfeeding their two children. Spears pushed back, suggesting Federline was attempting to “profit off [her] pain.”
She also denied separate drug-use allegations in 2023, calling claims that her family was worried about addiction “not true.”
Spears reportedly sold her full music catalogue to Primary Wave for an undisclosed sum in late 2025.
