Theatre Announce Debut EP Incarnate, Share New Song "You Are"

The Irish band Theatre are moving fast. After releasing their debut single “The Fall” last month, they’ve now followed it with “You Are,” a new track that arrives ahead of their first EP, Incarnate, due out next month.

There’s a lot to latch onto here, but the most immediate thing is Maeve O’Shea’s voice. As on “The Fall,” it carries the song with a kind of fierce, trembling force that feels hardwired for big emotional payoffs. Theatre, who are from Limerick, have a sound that balances heaviness with something more misted and searching, and “You Are” sits right in that sweet spot. It’s easy to hear why the comparison to the Cranberries keeps coming up, especially given the hometown connection and the way this track brings to mind the more forceful stretches of No Need To Argue.

O’Shea says the song grew out of images from childhood in West Cork. “You Are” explores visual imagery attached to my childhood spent in West Cork. Lyrically, each verse strings random memories together, the kind of memories that pop into your head as you’re walking down the street alone or doing your dishes. As the idea became whole, “You Are” turned into an ode to my childhood self, an anthem that I wish I could have heard when I needed it.
