RAYE lands acting debut in Yann Demange’s London crime thriller Lineage

RAYE will make her acting debut in Yann Demange’s crime thriller Lineage, set in modern-day London and filming soon in London.

RAYE is heading into film for the first time, joining Yann Demange’s forthcoming crime thriller Lineage.

The South London singer, who already made a brief appearance as herself in the Netflix drama Black Rabbit with Jason Bateman and Jude Law, has now been cast in Demange’s new project. The film has been in development for the past two years, shaped by a script from Enda Walsh, whose credits include Steve McQueen’s Hunger, alongside a story by Demange himself.

Set in present-day London, Lineage centers on Tariq, a father trying to piece his life back together after prison, before his brother pulls him back into the criminal underworld. The production will also feature Isabelle Huppert, Dali Benssalah and Adam Bessa, with filming due to begin in early August in London.

RAYE’s role has not been revealed, but Demange spoke about the film to Variety, calling Lineage “a homecoming for me in many ways.” He added that the film will include “characters I know very well… including a crime boss matriarch.”

He also described it as “my love letter to the London I grew up in and love,” and said he wants the film to honor the crime genre while still pushing it somewhere fresh, all while digging into family ties and the chance to rise above where you started.

That acting news lands while RAYE is in the middle of a busy stretch musically. She recently released her second album, This Music May Contain Hope, following 2023’s My 21st Century Blues.

In a five-star review, NME wrote: “This Music May Contain Hope is RAYE firing on all cylinders – and then some. It’s showstopping musical maximalism at its grandest, while still being grounded in relatable experiences and unbridled emotions. Again, it’s admittedly a lot to take in – but that’s also why it’s so glorious, every theatrical flourish and stylistic detour a declaration from RAYE that she is finally making music for herself.”

She is currently on a US tour and will return to the UK for a handful of dates later this year, including two nights at The O2 in London and headline slots at Reading & Leeds. Find her tour dates here and any remaining tickets to all of her shows here.
