Paycheque share “Temporary Love,” a hazy new single from their debut album featuring Jane Penny of TOPS and mix work from Jorge Elbrecht.

Paycheque’s new single “Temporary Love” makes an even stronger case for the LA duo than “Generic Actress,” the lead cut from their self-titled debut album. Where that first track hinted at their lane, this one settles in, cool and a little hazy, with a funky lo-fi spin on an ’80s pop dream that feels equal parts Chromatics and Men I Trust. It’s the kind of song that seems built for hot weather, the sort of thing that can cut through summer without raising its voice.
Jorge Elbrecht handled the mix, and the band say “Temporary Love” also carries a handful of key contributions that helped finish it off. In their statement, they note that the song was one of the first they began writing together, but also the last one they completed for the record. Jane Penny of TOPS stopped by their house and added flute and background vocals, which, by their account, helped pull the track into focus.
This was one of the first songs we ever started writing together, and it was the last one we finished for the record. Jane Penny from TOPS came over to our house and graciously contributed some flute and background vocals to this song, and that really helped tie it together. This song is about embracing impermanence. We think this song has a bit of a city pop flavor in terms of the arrangement and nods heavily to YMO with the vocoder backing vocals on the chorus.
And yes, once they point it out, the city pop influence does start to come into view. The arrangement has that glossy, softly worn quality the duo are describing, with the vocoder vocals on the chorus giving it a clear nod toward YMO. The accompanying video was directed by Paycheque’s Alison Goldfarb.
Paycheque arrives on 6/12 via Mansions And Millions. Pre-order it here.
