Overmono Announce Pure Devotion, Share Lead Single "Lockup"

Overmono are back with news of their next album. The Welsh brothers Tom and Ed Russell, who released their debut LP Good Lies in 2023, are set to follow it with Pure Devotion this summer. That first record earned Album Of The Week and landed at No. 2 on our list of the best electronic albums of the year, so expectations for the new one are already running high.

The duo framed the project in their own characteristically loose, studio-sketched way, writing that making music has always been about fun for them: being together in the room, laughing, and chasing new ways of making tunes. They describe Pure Devotion as the result of a long process of experimenting with the physical space of their studios, recording and re-amping sounds in all kinds of ways. In their note, they mention tracking a vocal through an old Tannoy speaker in a basement, running a synth through a 1930s train-station announcement speaker, tape over magnets, blown speakers, and an overclocked FX unit they found in Bromley years ago. They even say they oven-baked a cymbal covered in coffee grounds, crisps, and vinegar, crediting Sylvia Massy for that idea.

They also thank the collaborators who helped shape the record, including Rollo, John Holt, Kindora, and Ruthven, along with the artists they sampled, the studios they worked in, and the engineers they learned from. The message ends the way these things often should: with gratitude to everyone who will actually listen.

The album’s lead single, “Lockup,” is out now. Hear it below.
