Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Team Up With Abbey Romeo for White Stripes Covers
Abbey Romeo led Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel through White Stripes covers at Netflix Is A Joke’s Night Of Too Many Stars.
Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel turned up as Abbey Romeo’s backing band for a White Stripes set at the Night Of Too Many Stars event during the Netflix Is A Joke festival on Thursday, May 7.
Romeo, who stars in Netflix’s Love On The Spectrum, fronted the trio as O’Brien took guitar, Stewart handled drums and Kimmel played bass clarinet. Together, they ran through versions of Seven Nation Army and We’re Going To Be Friends, with all proceeds from the night going to the non-profit organisation NEXT For Autism.
The Hollywood Bowl event had a few other curveballs too. Noah Wyle, who stars in The Pitt, appeared in scrubs as Dr. Robby and gave two audience members a live physical exam with a stethoscope. It was the kind of off-the-rails bit these benefit nights tend to trade in, and this one leaned all the way in.
Elsewhere on the bill were Adam Sandler, Bill Burr, Steve Carell, Sarah Silverman, Nikki Glaser, John Mulaney and Ali Wong.
Kimmel, Stewart and O’Brien have each been regular critics of the Donald Trump administration. Earlier this year, Kimmel took aim at the president while presenting at the Oscars, opening with a line about courage and free speech before landing a jab that drew cheers from the room.
“We hear a lot about courage at shows like this but telling a story that could get you killed for telling it is real courage,” he began. “As you know there are some countries whose leaders don’t support free speech. I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea and CBS.”
He then followed that with another shot, this time at the recent Amazon Prime Video documentary about Donald Trump’s wife, Melania.
“Fortunately for all of us there’s an international community of filmmakers dedicated to telling the truth, oftentimes at great risk to make films that teach us, that call out injustice, that inspire us to take action, and there are also documentaries where you walk around the White House trying on shoes,” he joked.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! was briefly suspended by ABC last year after Kimmel accused the MAGA movement of exploiting the murder of Charlie Kirk. The US president celebrated the decision, but Kimmel was reinstated less than a week later after pushback from the entertainment industry.
