Jared Mattson of The Mattson 2 and Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra have a new record together. FEAR lands 6/5 via Jagjaguwar, and the pair have opened the door with the lead single “AMERICAN EAGLE.”
The collaboration grew out of mutual admiration online in 2024; the two connected, decided to meet, and then recorded FEAR in Palm Springs in June of that year. They tracked the album in just a couple of days, trusting the immediacy of those sessions to shape the record.
“We imagined the music living in in-between places — old motels with buzzing vacancy signs, abandoned gas stations at dusk, vast parking lots lit by sodium lamps where engines idle and lives briefly overlap. Spaces built for movement, not comfort. Bleak, anonymous, quietly human. Music that could sit inside that loneliness without trying to fix it — beauty carrying a low hum of danger underneath, calm without anesthesia.”
That passage comes from Mattson, and it reads like a map for FEAR: short, cinematic vignettes of place and mood rather than tidy resolutions. The Mark Francis-directed video for “AMERICAN EAGLE” accompanies the single and adds a visual counterpart to that late-night, roadside atmosphere.
