Helado Negro Reworks Sly & The Family Stone’s “Dance To The Music” Into a Warm, Off-Kilter Groove

Helado Negro returns with a cover of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Dance To The Music,” reshaping the 1967 classic into a humid, off-kilter groove while paying direct tribute to Sly Stone’s legacy.

Roberto Carlos Lange doesn’t sit still for long. Since dropping The Last Sound On Earth EP last fall, the artist known as Helado Negro has continued to move between scenes, showing up on tracks with Irreversible Entanglements and Vines before turning to a true classic: Sly & The Family Stone’s 1967 breakout, Dance To The Music.

His take keeps the original song’s bounce but filters it through his own hazy, heat-soaked palette. The rhythm still hits, but everything feels slightly softened at the edges, like psychedelic soul heard through late-night neon. It’s funky, yes, but also strange in a way that feels very Helado Negro.

Lange shared his excitement directly on Bandcamp, writing, “I’VE LOVED SLY STONE FROM THE VERY FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS SONG! I HOPE THIS SONG INVITES YOU TO LISTEN TO EVERYTHING HE’S EVER DONE. DANCE 2 THA MUSIC!”

The release also comes with striking cover art by Robert Beatty, a fitting visual match for a version that respects the original while nudging it into a different atmosphere.
