ear return with “Ne Plus Ultra,” a found-footage IDM single

ear's new single "Ne Plus Ultra" collages buzzy bass, spaceship blips, icy vocals, kitten cries, and 2000s electronica into a found-footage IDM mood.

ear have surfaced with their first new music of the year: Ne Plus Ultra. The single arrives after last September’s self-released debut album The Most Dear And The Future, which itself followed the duo’s first-ever release, 2024’s Nerves.

The track feels like a piece of found footage edited into a song — a collage of buzzy bass blowouts, spaceship blips, icy vocals, cut-and-paste sound bits, kitten cries, and 2000s electronica melodies. There is an artful clutter to it that still moves with intent; textures collide and then snap into place.

The title is a Latin phrase meaning “nothing further beyond,” which somehow suits the song’s mix of nostalgia and experimental brinkmanship.

It’s pretty sick. I only needed to give it one spin to know I’ll be blasting this all weekend. Listen below.
