DaBaby’s “Pop Dat Thang” Reaches No. 1 on Hot Rap Songs for the First Time Since 2020

DaBaby’s “Pop Dat Thang” climbs to No. 1 on Hot Rap Songs, giving him his first chart-topper there since “Rockstar” in 2020.

DaBaby is back on top of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart for the first time in nearly six years, as “Pop Dat Thang” rises to No. 1 on the May 16-dated list. The single climbs from No. 2 after posting gains across all three chart-driving metrics, with a lift also tied to a remix that brought in GloRilla, Yung Miami and YKNIECE.

Released through SouthCoast/Interscope/Interscope Capitol, “Pop Dat Thang” knocks Don Toliver’s “E85” out of the lead. That track had spent 11 straight weeks at No. 1 before slipping to No. 2 this week.

For DaBaby, the move marks just his second career Hot Rap Songs leader. His first came with “Rockstar,” featuring Roddy Ricch, which ruled for nine weeks in June through August 2020.

On the week of its coronation, “Pop Dat Thang” logged 8 million official streams, 20.1 million in radio airplay audience impressions and a minimal number of track sales in the U.S. for the May 1 to 7 tracking period, according to Luminate. Each category improved from the prior week, with streaming up 24%, airplay up 7%, and sales up 19%. The biggest push came from the remix’s first full week of impact, even though the added guest verses were folded into the song’s billing while the original version still accounted for most of the activity.

The song’s momentum stretches beyond one chart. “Pop Dat Thang” also moves to No. 1 on Rap Airplay, up from No. 2, giving DaBaby his fifth leader on that ranking. He previously topped the chart with “Suge” for 15 weeks in 2019, “BOP” for one week in 2020, “Rockstar” for 10 weeks in 2020 and, alongside Lil Baby, through their feature roles on Pop Smoke’s “For the Night,” which spent eight weeks at No. 1 in 2021.

Elsewhere, the track climbs 6-5 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and jumps 43-26 on the Billboard Hot 100. Radio is clearly doing plenty of work here too: it rises 7-3 on Rhythmic Airplay, remains at No. 3 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay for a third consecutive week, and inches up 30-29 on Radio Songs.

“Pop Dat Thang” appears on DaBaby’s Be More Grateful album, which arrived in January and debuted at No. 6 on Top Rap Albums. That made it his fifth top 10 entry on the chart.
