Charli XCX shares the stripped-back B-side ‘I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day And Night’ after unveiling ‘Rock Music’.
Charli XCX has dropped a new B-side, ‘I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day And Night’, arriving in the wake of her new single ‘Rock Music’, which landed on Friday, May 8. The new track takes a very different route from the club-heavy world of 2024’s Brat, leaning instead into a stripped-back, more guitar-forward mood.
Alongside the song, Charli shared a lo-fi black-and-white video that finds her moving through hallways before ending up in a dance studio. In her caption on Instagram, she explained how the clip came together: “i went to Kyoto for six weeks to shoot a film. while we were there, i made this video with aidan [Zamiri]. only available on vinyl & here on b.sides. so rip the audio if you want it xx.”
The lyrics are the real centre of gravity here. Charli opens with, “Maybe we can become each other?” before spiraling through questions that feel more curious than settled: “I wonder if I just want you as my best friend, or maybe if I’m a really late bloomer.” She later wonders “if I maybe could be gay/But come on, look at me, I’m probably not” and “if you were actually gay/Or if that’s somеthing you just say for your career.” The chorus circles back to the title, with Charli repeating, “I keep thinking ’bout you every single day/I keep thinking ’bout you every single night.”
There’s been plenty of movement around Charli’s next era already. Last month, her team confirmed she was finishing a new album, and soon after that, an interview with British Vogue teased the line “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music,” which set off speculation about a heavier pivot. Charli later pushed back on the idea bluntly: “I never said I was making a rock album.”
‘Rock Music’, which came out on Friday, arrived with its own grungy video and a lineup that includes A.G. Cook, Finn Keane, formerly known as Easyfun, and her husband, The 1975’s George Daniel, all appearing as her rock band. In the British Vogue piece, she also said she was actively trying not to make Brat 2.0. “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad,” she said. “What’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be”.
Charli’s last studio album was 2024’s Brat, the record that turned into a full-scale cultural event and helped define the whole “Brat Summer” moment, cementing her as a global pop force in the process. Since then, she’s also released a soundtrack album for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights.
And she’s hardly been sitting still. Alongside that soundtrack work, the ‘360’ singer wrote music for A24’s Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway, appeared in her own mockumentary The Moment, took a role in the romance Erupcja, and signed on for the fantasy film 100 Nights Of Hero. She also played a comedic version of herself in Overcompensating, and was recently cast opposite Supergirl star Milly Alcock in a new horror film directed by Takashi Miike.
