Case Oats Return With “Bottom Of An Afternoon,” a Hazy Folk-Rock Turn Ahead of Tour

Case Oats, the duo of singer-songwriter Casey Gomez Walker and drummer Spencer Tweedy, are back with a new single, “Bottom Of An Afternoon,” arriving just ahead of their upcoming run of shows. The pair, who are also engaged, released their debut album Last Missouri Exit on Merge last year; this new track feels like a deliberate step sideways rather than a simple continuation.

Where that LP often leaned into a more direct roots framework, “Bottom Of An Afternoon” places Gomez Walker’s voice in a blurrier, lightly electronic folk-rock setting. The arrangement moves with a soft, fogged-in pulse, and the song includes a trumpet solo from Gomez Walker that subtly shifts the emotional center. Vocally, she balances a classic folk plainspokenness with a rough-edged anti-folk candor, especially on the line: “There’s gotta be an answer / Stickin’ out the bottom of an afternoon.”

In a statement, Gomez Walker describes the song as a way of processing loss:

“This song is a mantra for grief. As a kid I read Aesop’s Fables and was comforted by the idea that there’s always a moral to draw from an experience. As an adult, I find myself calling out asking ‘why?’, begging for visits from ghosts, holding on to any lesson I can find in the pages of books.”
