Boston Hardcore Band RISK Return With Primal New Release Forever

Boston hardcore band RISK share Forever, a 17-minute blast of metallic '90s-style fury, out now on Triple B.

Sometimes hardcore just needs to hit the target. Not in some wide-open, genre-blurring way, and not as the backdrop for an especially outsized persona. Sometimes the thrill is simpler than that: a band locking in, keeping the wheels on, and attacking the familiar with real force. That is the lane RISK occupy on their new release Forever.

The Boston-area band have been around for more than a decade, but until now their recorded output was slim. Their only full-length before this was 2022’s Monologues Of Misery. Now they’re back with Forever, which they’re calling an LP even though seven songs and 17 minutes would also sit comfortably on a 10-inch EP. The label matters less than the impact: this is a blunt, ’90s-style blast of ferocity, metallic without tipping too far into the metal end of the spectrum.

The riffs are massive, the screams arrive like a jolt, and the Frank Sinatra samples add a strange little flash of personality that works better than it has any right to. RISK are not trying to reinvent hardcore here. That’s part of the appeal. They sound focused, energized, and fully committed to the form, which is exactly why Forever lands with such force when the mood is right.

Forever is out now on Triple B.
