Body Type announce Tally with “Mulberry,” a playful new single produced by Stella Mozgawa and out 7/24 on (p)Doom.

Body Type’s Sophie McComish and Annabel Blackman sound like they’re having a genuinely great time on the mic on “Mulberry,” the lead single from their new album Tally. The Sydney post-punk band lean into a bright, brittle jangle here, and the vocal delivery has that loose, teasing energy that makes a song feel bigger than its parts. There’s a bit of early Courtney Barnett in the mix, sure, though part of that comparison has to do with the accent as much as the attitude. Still, it’s not hard to hear why the parallel comes up.
That comparison lands a little more pointedly when you remember Body Type are set to tour Europe and the UK with Barnett later this year. For fans, that’s a neat bit of alignment, but the more immediate news is that Body Type have been building toward this moment for a while. Their sophomore album, Expired Candy, arrived three years ago, and since then they’ve signed to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s (p)Doom label.
Tally was recorded in Los Angeles with Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa producing, another strong name to add to the stack of connections around the record. It’s an appealing combination of co-signs, but “Mulberry” suggests the real draw will be what Body Type do with that setup once the album lands. As an opening statement, it’s plenty persuasive.
Tally is out 7/24 on (p)Doom. Pre-order it here.
