Blood Red Shoes release scuzzy new single ‘Dead Air’ for horror game Directive 8020

Blood Red Shoes have shared 'Dead Air', a new song written for Supermassive Games' sci-fi horror adventure Directive 8020.

Blood Red Shoes have dropped a new single called ‘Dead Air’, written for Directive 8020, the latest horror project from Supermassive Games.

The game, a cinematic sci-fi horror adventure, arrives later today, May 12. On Steam, it’s described as a blend of “intense survival gameplay with meaningful choices and a branching storyline.” The setup is bleak enough on its own: Earth is dying, humanity is almost out of time, and Tau Ceti f sits 12 light years away as the last possible escape. When the colony ship Cassiopeia crashes on the planet, the crew quickly discovers they are not alone.

That’s when the horror kicks in. According to the game’s description, the crew is hunted by an alien organism that can mimic its prey, forcing them to outthink whatever is chasing them if they want to survive. And as if that isn’t enough pressure, the choice at the centre of the story is even heavier: saving themselves may mean risking everyone back on Earth.

The soundtrack is handled by Jason Graves, a longtime Supermassive collaborator, while Blood Red Shoes have contributed the new track that now ties them to the game’s universe. The band shared ‘Dead Air’ below:

On Instagram, the band said Supermassive Games first invited them into the studio to look at what the team had been developing. What they found, they said, was a project that felt much closer to a playable horror film than a conventional game.

“As two people who know almost nothing about video games we were surprised to find out where the culture is at,” they wrote. “This game is more like a playable horror movie and the atmosphere of it fit perfectly with what we were making on [2022 album] ‘Ghosts On Tape’ We came out of there and made ‘Dead Air’ for them using some rough ideas we had sketched out with [producer] Tom Dalgety while recording our last album.”

Blood Red Shoes marked their 20th anniversary in 2024 with a run of gigs, then reunited earlier this year with the new single ‘Screams’. They’re also due to play a European and UK tour in October.

Elsewhere, Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul has joined the cast of Fallout for season three.
