Widowspeak share “Soft Cover,” the latest preview of Roses, out 6/5 via Captured Tracks.

Widowspeak are leaning into a particularly strong run right now. The married duo of Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas have already set the tone for their new album Roses with the early singles “If You Change” and “No Driver,” both of which made a convincing case that they remain one of the sharper acts working in this lane.
Now they’ve added another preview: “Soft Cover.” The song moves with real momentum and a stack of hooks, while Hamilton’s voice stays in that hazy, spellbound register the band does so well. She says the track is “about infatuation: wanting and daydreaming about someone as you’re going about your day… even if, and maybe especially if, you’ve been with them a long time.”
The recording story is almost as vivid as the song itself. Widowspeak cut “Soft Cover” at the Old Carpet Factory on the Greek island of Hydra, and Hamilton notes that the band brought in a Rhodes for the session. “It came in a car from Athens, then took a boat, then a donkey carried it up to the studio,” she says.
