Bring Me the Horizon’s Oliver Sykes Says He’s Okay After Fan Throws Phone and Causes Mild Concussion

Oliver Sykes says he’s doing all right after a fan hurled a phone at his head during Bring Me the Horizon’s Monday night show in St. Louis, leaving the British frontman with a mild concussion.

The incident landed in the middle of the band’s set while Sykes was singing “Happy Song,” from Bring Me the Horizon’s 2015 album That’s the Spirit. In fan-captured footage, the phone is seen striking him in the head. Sykes immediately snaps back at the crowd, shouting, “Who the f— just threw a phone at my f—ing head?” before tossing the device back.

Afterward, he appears to check his head and hands for blood, and later footage shows him rubbing his temples and forehead while performing “Can You Feel My Heart.” It was a rough moment to watch, especially for fans in the room who could see the performance get visibly thrown off course.

On Tuesday, May 12, Sykes addressed the situation on his Instagram Story and tried to calm things down. “Alright everyone – just wanted to let you know I’m all good,” he wrote. “The phone to the head definitely smarted and I ended up with a mild concussion, but the swelling’s gone down a decent amount already.”

He also apologized to the crowd for how the rest of the set felt after the hit. “Last night I was struggling a bit on stage afterwards because singing was putting a lot of pressure on the wound and making things feel a bit disorienting while performing, so I’m sorry on my part for what may of seemed like a half hearted performance,” he said.

Sykes ended his update by telling fans heading to the band’s Tuesday night show in Kansas City that “everything should be fine for tonight’s gig.”

Bring Me the Horizon, one of Britain’s biggest modern rock exports and two-time Billboard Hot 100 hitmakers, are used to big reactions. This one, though, crossed a line nobody on either side of the barricade should have to normalize.
