Katy Perry Hilariously Reacts to Josh Groban’s Engagement as “The One That Got Away” Keeps Trending

Katy Perry joked about Josh Groban’s engagement in a TikTok as “The One That Got Away” surges again on TikTok.

Katy Perry is leaning all the way into the joke. As her 2010 single “The One That Got Away” keeps circulating on TikTok, the pop star posted a sly response to the fact that the song, which she has previously said is about Josh Groban, now has a very timely plot twist: he’s engaged.

In a satirical TikTok shared Monday, May 11, Perry staged the whole bit like a dramatic breakup montage, complete with fake tears, an oversized drink, and an article about Groban’s engagement visible in the background. The clip plays over “The One That Got Away,” with Perry captioning it simply, “congrats,” followed by a champagne glass emoji.

Groban revealed in April that he had proposed to his girlfriend, theater actress Natalie McQueen. “MY BEST FRIEND SAID YES!!!” he wrote on Instagram at the time. Perry’s reaction, posted a couple of weeks later, makes the whole thing feel less like heartbreak and more like a very online bit between people who know exactly how this song lives in public memory now.

The connection has been public for years. Perry confirmed in conversation with James Corden during a 2017 livestream that the Teenage Dream cut, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, was inspired by Groban, whom she briefly dated around 2009. Groban later responded on Watch What Happens Live in 2018, saying, “I was not expecting that. That was a double take and a spit of my coffee. It’s very sweet of her to say that.”

Even with Perry now sharing plenty of happy posts with Justin Trudeau, whom she began dating last year, she clearly hasn’t lost the sense of humor around this old tabloid footnote. And Perry and her team have been making sure “The One That Got Away” stays in the conversation, too. In April, she released an extended director’s cut of the song’s cinematic video and put out an EP, Thinking of the One That Got Away, which paired the track with another older favorite that’s also been resurging, “Thinking of You.”

It’s a neat little pop cycle: an old hit goes viral, a real-life ex becomes the punchline, and Perry turns the whole thing into content without pretending it’s anything more than what it is. See Perry’s TikTok about Groban’s engagement below.
