Stormzy’s #Merky Films Is Making an Official Ian Wright Biopic

Stormzy’s #Merky Films will co-produce an official Ian Wright biopic charting the Arsenal icon’s rise from South London hardship.

Stormzy’s #Merky Films is set to executive produce the official biopic of Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright, adding another high-profile project to the rapper’s growing screen and storytelling ambitions.

The production company, launched last year as an extension of the wider #Merky brand, was built with a stated focus on British stories and voices that have too often been left out of the frame. Now it’s turning toward one of the country’s most beloved football figures. The film, confirmed today on Tuesday May 12, will trace Wright’s rise from hardship to becoming Arsenal’s second-top goal scorer and Crystal Palace’s Player of the Century.

The story will also look closely at Wright’s upbringing as a Black British boy born to first-generation Caribbean immigrants, set against the realities of a working-class South London community. According to the official synopsis, the film begins on the Honor Oak Estate in Brockley, where football is his only escape from a difficult home life. Schoolteacher Sydney Pigden is the one who spots something in him and pushes him to imagine a bigger future. But by his teens, the synopsis says, Wright’s dream of making it as a footballer is unravelling under rejection, oppression, and his own anger.

“By the time he is in his early 20s, Ian’s hope has faded, not least because he strives to be the parent he never had. But with his raw talent finally causing a stir, Ian faces a life-altering choice – risk the only security he has ever known, or take one last shot at the big time,” the synopsis continues.

The project arrives with Wright already cast as the sort of figure who seems almost too well known to need introducing, and yet still has parts of his life that have never been put together in one place on screen. After years of rejection from clubs as a teenager, he went on to earn 33 caps for England, share the pitch era with names like Beckham and Zidane, and push through injury setbacks that threatened to stop him.

He retired in 2000 and has since become one of football’s most respected broadcasters. In 2023, Prince William awarded him an OBE. He has also repeatedly championed the women’s game and used his platform to speak about the impact of domestic violence on children.

“Telling my story in full for the first time feels surreal and, in some ways, a long time coming. There are parts of my life that will be familiar because they’ve been talked about over the years, but this film is the first time we’re bringing it all together,” Wright said.
“Retelling my story to Tom [Wilton, who wrote the script] has also made me realise how much Britain has changed from my parents arriving here on the Windrush, what that meant for me and my brothers, and the experiences that will never leave me,” he added. “I hope it shows how complicated life can be for a young person and the influence people around you can have – good and bad.
“My story is one that truly shows how the company you keep can break you down and build you up. There are hard-hitting moments but in the end I want it to give people hope and joy.”

Stormzy and Akua Agyemfra are executive producing for #Merky Films, alongside Academy Award nominated producer Sara McFarlane, known for A Love Letter to M, and Stephen Tottingham.

“I’ve worked with Ian for more than 10 years and it’s an honour to be producing his life story,” Tottingham said. “I feel a sense of responsibility to do Wrighty’s life story justice – he’s one of Britain’s most-loved personalities and I can’t think of anyone else with the depth and breadth of his experiences.”

Stormzy also commented: “It’s a real honour for #Merky Films to be co-producing Ian Wright’s story. Wrighty’s journey goes far beyond football – it’s about resilience, family and believing in yourself against the odds. He’s inspired generations on and off the pitch and we’re so proud to help bring such an important and powerful story to the screen.”

Casting will be handled by Carolyn McLeod CDG, CSA and Matt Sheppard, the award-winning team behind the BAFTA-nominated independent feature Boiling Point. Further details, including the cast, title and release schedule, will be announced later.

#Merky Films is part of the wider community-driven ecosystem Stormzy has spent the last decade building. That includes #Merky Football Careers, which he launched in 2022 to tackle racial equity in football and open up jobs in the industry for UK Black Heritage youth. Since then, the initiative has added more than 60 roles across UK football for young people of UK Black Heritage, and in 2024 it teamed up with Adidas on an online platform designed to build a wider community for applicants.

The #Merky umbrella already stretches beyond film and football. There’s #MerkyFC HQ, the London centre for music, football and gaming, and #Merky Books, the publishing imprint that later expanded into a two-day literature festival.

Stormzy has also backed education projects through the years, including the scholarship scheme he announced in 2021 to support 30 more students at Cambridge University via #Merky Foundation and HSBC. The scheme offered 10 students per year a £20,000 annual scholarship covering tuition fees and maintenance costs. He brought the initiative back in 2023, pledging to fund 36 more Black Cambridge students over the following three years.
