Phoebe Bridgers Debuts New Songs at Her First Solo Show Since 2023

Phoebe Bridgers returned to the stage for her first solo show in three years on Friday, May 8, playing the Liberty, a 400-capacity theater in Roswell, New Mexico. The invite-only set came with phones locked away, and Bridgers used it to revisit fan staples like “Motion Sickness,” “Kyoto,” and “Garden Song” while also airing out several new songs and a video short teasing her still-unannounced third album.

According to reports from the show, Bridgers told the crowd the intimate performance was a “test” ahead of future dates. She was joined by longtime collaborator Christian Lee Hutson, who backed her on guitar, harmonica, harmonies, and percussion. One of the new tracks she played allegedly addressed the death of her father in 2023, adding another layer of weight to a night that was already being parsed closely by fans. Then, on May 9, flyers for another Bridgers show reportedly popped up in Lubbock, Texas, the same day a series of photos surfaced showing Bridgers in the studio with Matty Healy, Alex G, Jack Antonoff, and her partner, Bo Burnham, apparently working on the next record. Pitchfork has reached out to Bridgers’ team for comment.

The night was full of small details that fans were quick to obsess over. Each attendee got a piece of a painting tucked inside the lockable pouches used for phones, and some have already speculated that all the fragments together may form the cover of Bridgers’ next album. New merch sold at the show also seemed to carry rumored lyrics from one of the unreleased songs: “Now I can’t see any stars in the sky. When a dreams comes true, a fantasy dies…but we’re gonna be alright, me and you.”

Bridgers last released a full-length album with Punisher in 2020. Her most recent new song was “Sidelines,” which arrived in 2022 on the soundtrack to Hulu’s Conversations With Friends. In the years since, she’s kept busy with collaborations alongside Rob Moose, the National, Arlo Parks, SZA, Andrew Bird, and others. She’s also remained firmly tied to boygenius, the trio she formed with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus; in 2024, the group won three Grammys for The Record, their debut album. Bridgers’ first solo record, Stranger in the Alps, was released in 2017.
