Phoebe Bridgers Returns With Three New Songs at First Solo Show in Three Years

Phoebe Bridgers used her first solo show in three years to debut three new songs, turning a small New Mexico room into the kind of scene fans will be talking about for a while.

The California singer-songwriter last played solo dates as Taylor Swift’s opening act for three nights at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in May 2023. On Friday night, May 8, she stepped back out on her own at The Liberty in Roswell, New Mexico, a 400-capacity venue that made the return feel especially pointed.

There was no formal album announcement, but the set did plenty of the teasing for her. Bridgers premiered three new tracks, and people in the room described them as “very sad folk” with harmonica arrangements. Fans also noticed that each person in attendance received an exclusive card, and the pieces appear to fit together into artwork for whatever comes next.

For much of the night, Bridgers worked through material from her two solo albums, Stranger In The Alps and Punisher, but the new songs and the surrounding clues are what have set the fanbase buzzing. Posters and merch reportedly leaned into aliens and UFO imagery, while lyrics printed on new merchandise suggested a concept that may be carrying over into the next project.

“There was no official album or release date announcement, but Bridgers did reportedly say that she saw the show as a ‘test’ for whatever is set to come next.”

That “test” description has only added to the speculation. A few in attendance said the show felt like a preview for future dates, with alien-themed staging, piano, guitar and percussion on the band setup, and Bridgers experimenting with new vocal techniques. Reports from the room also said Maxine was brought out, another detail fans quickly spread online.

More of the night’s detail came from the merch table. Fans shared photos of new lyrics attached to the items, including “Now I can’t see any stars in the sky / When a dream comes true, a fantasy dies” and “But we’re gonna be alright, me and you.” That’s the sort of breadcrumb trail Bridgers fans know how to read.

By the end, the show sounds like it turned into something a lot more intimate than a standard comeback gig. Fans said Bridgers stayed behind to talk to people, sign autographs and, in some cases, spend time with nearly everyone still in the room. She was also photographed in a Black Sabbath shirt, which only added to the very Phoebe Bridgers mix of casual and loaded.
