Muse unveil apocalyptic video for “Cryogen” from upcoming album The Wow! Signal
Muse drop an apocalyptic video for "Cryogen," filmed on Europa, previewing their cosmic‑themed album The Wow! Signal arriving June 26.
Muse have delivered a frostbitten vision to match their new single: an apocalyptic music video for “Cryogen” that plants the band on Europa, Jupiter’s frozen moon, and teases more of the sci‑fi drama they’re building around The Wow! Signal.
Directed by Elliott Gonzo, the clip swaps arena pyrotechnics for a red waterfall and a blistering polar desert. Matt Bellamy wanders the tundra, searching for the ringed aircraft that appeared in the video for lead single “Be With You,” while the band performs at the base of that otherworldly cascade. After the UFO breaks from the sea and emits a searing beam of crimson light, the screen snaps to black.
The single itself surfaced last month, following a live debut at an intimate Brixton Academy show, and continues the roll-out that began with 2024’s “Unravelling” and the recent “Be With You,” all pointing toward Muse’s tenth LP. The track leans into familiar territory for long‑time fans: there are echoes of the gothic space‑rock textures of 2001’s Origin Of Symmetry and the widescreen stadium sweep of 2006’s Black Holes & Revelations, capped by a thunderous breakdown and a tidy, modern polish courtesy of live collaborator and producer Dan Lancaster (Bring Me The Horizon, Blink‑182). Additional production is credited to Aleks von Korff.
Lyrically, Bellamy dresses heartache in cosmic terms: “Winter’s end, she’s Europa, I’m a cracked interloper / Icicles pierce my heart so cruel and quiet / Loneliness, she left me trembling in a polar desert / Wilderness, I’m breaking…Cryogen, I can never cry again / Cryogen, I’m freezing over.” The imagery fits the video’s cold, isolating mise‑en‑scène and the record’s broader fascinations.
Per the press materials, The Wow! Signal borrows its name from one of modern astronomy’s most intriguing footnotes: a powerful, 72‑second radio burst detected in 1977 from the constellation Sagittarius that was logged under the sequence 6EQUJ5 and annotated with the now‑famous “WOW!” on the printout. The band says the album will explore “a mix of cosmic mystery, existential hope, and the exhilarating possibility of contact with something far greater than ourselves.”
The Wow! Signal lands on June 26. Muse have also revealed a 2026 North American arena tour with Bloc Party, The Temper Trap and Portugal. The Man; UK and European dates are expected soon. At their recent London show, Bellamy even teased that the band would “be back in November,” which left fans buzzing for more.
For now the video for “Cryogen” is another chapter in Muse’s ongoing marriage of stadium scale and speculative fiction: icy, dramatic, and just theatrical enough to make you feel the room—and the void—at the same time.
