Kelsey Lu shares "Better Than That" with Sampha, a piano-and-strings slow burn from her upcoming album So Help Me God, out June 12 on Dirty Hit.

Kelsey Lu is in the final stretch before releasing her second album, So Help Me God, due June 12 via Dirty Hit. After recent singles “Running To Pain” and “Portrait Of A Lady On Fire,” she’s now shared “Better Than That,” a new collaboration with Sampha.
The track opens in a bare, piano-led space, with strings slowly widening the frame behind it. As it moves forward, the arrangement keeps shifting shape—pulling back, then blooming again—while Lu and Sampha trade a vocal chemistry that feels intimate without ever sounding overstated. Lu’s delivery, in particular, carries that mix of control and release she’s become known for.
Lu said she recorded the song in London in 2021 while working in a shared studio space near Damon Albarn’s setup. She described the session as spontaneous and emotionally loaded:
It all came pouring out one night unwritten and has always held a special place for me. I often end up playing detective on what I was speaking on, and around that time I was really unravelling my sense of purpose both in music and in life in general. This song represents a lot of swirling and at times frustrating internal thoughts, reflections, and contradictions on wanting to feel seen and unseen.
